PERCENTAGE CHANGE

How percentage increase is calculated

Percentage change compares a new value with an original value. Subtract the original value from the new value, divide the difference by the original value, then multiply by 100. A positive answer means an increase; a negative answer means a decrease.

Formula

Percentage change = ((New value − Original value) ÷ Original value) × 100

For example, if a price rises from 80 to 100, the difference is 20 and the percentage increase is 25%. The calculation uses the original value as the baseline, not the new value.

When to use this tool

Use this calculator to compare prices, sales, website traffic, salaries, project costs, test scores or other numeric measurements. Make sure both values use the same unit and that the original value is not zero. When the original value is zero, percentage change is undefined because division by zero is not possible.
